When approached to speak on a cruise which began on my birthday in Durban, we leapt at the opportunity. Stops including PE, Cape Town, Luderitz, Walvis, St Helena, Ascension and ending for us in Dakar, Senegal. What a time it has been onboard the recently refitted Crystal Serenity. Many of the staff recognize us, the young South Africa Saffers calling me ‘Oom Rob’. There is a themed staff party onboard tonight and one young man, Stephan who works on board, is going dressed as me – no doubt nobody will know as he looks like a model and nobody will connect him with me! I have offered him my hat and stick…
The affection however is most appreciated. Bet nobody calls Ambassador Tony Leon Oom Tony?

Mistaking 18 for 16 on a cocktail invitation (not wearing my glasses), we arrived at a Virtuoso function we were not invited to. The hosts could not have been more gracious, but we slunk away at the earliest opportunity. We work very hard at being punctual and correct and value the invitations extended our way.

The Cruise Director has gifted me a beautiful, gnarled stick, which I plan to use for a Campfire Storytelling session, an additional talk I have been requested to do. Ardmore Ceramics were onboard between Durban and Walvis Bay, selling a vast amount of their exquisite products – a legendary success story. Ardmore Ceramics inimitably South African.

The seas have been kind and we feel spoilt rotten at this unique opportunity. When I mentioned to a friend that the food onboard would kill me – he said at least go down in style! The quality of food in 8 restaurants beggars belief, as does the quality of the entertainment. James Fox, a Welshman, blew us away with the music of Billy Joel. No doubt his instinct told him Wales would win the Six Nations?
With extraordinary travels remaining in 2019, including Karen, our cups certainly runneth over. Hence the photo of a small, humble boat in the Cape Town docks called “Yes We Can”…
